How did you finish school?

frogmagreen started this conversation

Hi everyone

I am a single mom of two little ones.  I chose to become a single mom to protect them from an abusive situation.  I spent the first two years working my butt off! at a job that was going no where but was keeping the bills paid.  I realized after some time that my job was preventing me from getting the aid I needed to finish the rest of college (which I initially sacrificed to support my abusive husband in his job!).  I chose to go back to school.  My family was not too happy about this decision and does not provide a lot of support... so we are on our own with the finances etc.  My question is this: I am looking for other single moms who have finished college and have any advice about how to do this without consistant family babysitting or financial support. It seems all the resources out there say:  Turn to your support group!  or find a support group!  Well I don't trust my kids to strangers and the family cannot help support me full time as they work full time and have their own struggles- although they certainly try to do what they can!  I am currently struggling through my first year and am going into debt to pay for it.  I am also appyling for scholarships and grants every chance I get but they are not coming through often enough.  In addition, my child support may be dissapearing soon.  I have looked for odd jobs to supplement but nothing will fit into my kids school schedule and daycare is too expensive.

If you have any advice for legit work at home or just well wishes I could sure use some positivity.  The lack of acceptance for what I am doing plus the societal judgement is making it really hard to keep going- even though I do!  Sometimes I just feel TOTALLY alone.

Thanks for listening!

Hi there.  I am also a single mom of two with no support from a father and very limited family support..(my mom is disabled)  I just graduated from EIU and am in the masters degree program at UIS.  I did all my college online.  It takes a lot of discipline but I think it is well worth it.  Another tip is to get a job as a waitress.  Doing this means you can work fewer hours and make the same amount of money as you would working for 9 dollars an hour full time.  It also ensures you are eligible for financial aid from your college.  Use your financial aid money to supplement your income.  As long as you can be disciplined and be able to budget yourself, this can work for you too.  I had my first child at 18 so I know that if I can do it you can too.

It seems you are trying and things just aren't working out. I know the feeling, and just wanted you to know, that things get better. I will pray that you can accomplish what you have set out to do. One question though, Are you sure this is the right time to do this?

I hope everything falls in to place soon. Try churches, and also see if 211.org  is available, they have lists of different organizations that help for free or on a sliding scale basis.
